Readings of gas-filled neutron detectors in homogeneous geological media

© Kulik V.V.

A theoretical analysis of the responses of neutron gas - filled detectors widely used in nuclear geophysics is carried out. The total count rate of neutrons may be represented as sum of two components corresponding to thermal and epithermal neutrons. The approximate analytical expressions for immediately measurable values (i.e. for responses of hole and filtered detectors) depending on the detector characteristics, effective spacing and neutron parameters of the medium being investigated are obtained. The filter differences and the filter ratios, with which the effectiveness of the stationary neutron methods of the investigation of absorbing geological media may be raised are considered.
