Ring current in the magnitosphere and its asymmetry during a great magnetic storm

© Sumaruk Y.P.

Development of the magnetospheric ring current and its asymmetry during great magnetic storm on 27-29 August 1978 is investigated. The increase of the solar wind ion density, stream velocity and the appearance of irregular Bz component of IMF on August 27 intensified the elevation of the auroral electrojets intensity and didn't cause the magnetospheric ring current intensification. It is shown that elevation of the ring current intensity begins during the appearance and long time existence of the Bz<0 IMF component on 28 August. Asymmetry of ring current increases with the ring current intensity enhancement. The maximum of the asymmetry coincides with the ring current intensity maximum.
