A new approach to the Western Black Sea trough magnetic anomalies interpretation

© Kravchenko S.N., Orliuk M.I., Rusakov O.M.

Physical and geological substations are given of the nature of the West Black Sea regional magnetic anomaly. For the first time it is interpreted as being caused by reduction of trivalent iron to bivalent one under influence of hydrocarbon that results in forming secondary minerals with strong magnetic properties. In contrast to traditional approaches such an interpretation does not contradict the results of other geophysical methods. In future local features of the anomaly magnetic field over a thick sedimentary cover may be used as indicators of hydrocarbon accumulation in it.
