Studies of variations of earthquake seismic moments in the Baikal region

© Klyuchevskiy A.V.

The study distinguishes three temporal intervals which give rise to ordered variations of seismic moments of earthquakes, well explained by variations in relative content of shocks with normal fault type of motion in annual earthquake samplings. The nature of this phenomenon is associated with axes exchange of major and intermediate stresses which is observed in earthquake sources of the Baikal rift and is generally formed by rifting processes. The results obtained are in good agreement with the present notions of the Baikal rift development. Geodynamic activization is followed by rather high seismic activity in the areas of maximum inhomogeneity of the medium, which appears to result from variations in fluid regime in the most permeable sites in the crust.
