The role of bending mechanism in formation of asymmetrical folds within shear zones

© Gonchar V.V.

Asymmetrical folds developed within zones of plastic shear and shear flow show evident indications of bending mechanism manifestation during the stage of compression. The bases of nonlinear elastic bending of a thin rod have been used for simulation of single folds and flexures. The development of asymmetrical folds was found to be dependent on inclination angle of concentrated acting power and progressive character of its variations. Two main schemes of folding development have been considered: 1) formation under conditions of fixed linear shear zone forming dog's ear folds, and 2) formation of non-dog's ear folds along the line of minimal power.
