Electromagnetic vector potential: a physical object or a helper mathematical function?

© Shuman V.N.

General structure and special role of elecrtromagnetic potentials in modern electrodynamic theory is under discussion. Problems of gradient invariance of potentials and its connection with zero field potentials, unremovable by calibrating transformation, are being considered. Brief review of task state is being proposed and arguments are being analyzed, which give "material form" to vector potential in case of Coulomb calibrating condition. Fundamental character of zero field potentials is underlined, which presence obviously is a necessary condition of existence of Aaronov-Bohme effect, satisfying marginal conditions in case of solving applied problems of electrodynamics of anisotropic media, the last one gives weighty bases to consider a vector potential to be rather a physical variable than subsidiary mathematical function.
