This paper focuses on the world experience and prospects of application of the seismic method for prospecting, development and production of coalbed methane in Ukraine. The literature review demonstrates that favorable conditions for the method to be a success should be laid even in the field, where wide-azimuth multicomponent acquisition with rather long offsets the source-the receiver is required. It allows information on fractured zones in coal-bearing deposits, which are most prospective for concentration and production of coalbed methane, to be obtained from seismic data in processing and interpretation stages. The review is preceded by analysis of the geological and spatial regularities of methane distribution in the coal-bearing deposits of the Donets basin.
